I try and imagine what life would
have been like back in the fifties. I mean, it’s got to be
different than the here and now, right? As we all know with
every decade comes a new fad that lasts for a little while
before dwindling away until there’s nothing left but a fond
memory.
For example Hula Hoops were born in 1957 and were all
the rage. Wham-O, the makers of the Hula Hoop sold 25 million of
them within the first 2 months! The last time I saw a Hula Hoop
was in high school during P.E. about ten years ago.
Speaking of Fads, Poodles sure
were spoiled in the fifties. You could probably walk into nearly
any store and find something made to look like a poodle. I could
just hear it now, some mom in the fifties telling her son to
take the poodle trash can out to the curb.
There were poodles in
every shape size and color. And you can’t forget those all
American poodle girls! They were proud as can be prancing around
in poodle skirts and little pink sweaters, and the fad wouldn’t
have been complete without the creation of the poodle haircut.
A well known fad that was huge
for awhile was the stuffing of people in telephone booths. The
fad started as part of college life in South Africa. They
claimed to hold a record with 25 people in a phone booth at
once. When the college kids in the US heard about it, there were
people all over the place trying to break records.
Right after
the mid fifties, the fad died only to be swerved into a new
style of stuffing Volkswagens with more sweaty college kids.
