Sky King - A Hero I loved To Watch

Sky King was a TV show mainly made for kids but adults loved it too.

Sky King was a former military pilot who patrolled the skies and helped anyone he saw that was in need of help. He mostly flew over the Flying Crown Ranch but was known to help most anyone who needed it.

Sky King ran from 1951-1954 and was in reruns from 1959-1966.

Sky King was played by Kirby Grant. Penny was Sky King's niece and played by Gloria Winters.

Sky King grew it's popularity by wholesome story of good against bad, and Sky King would always win out.

The premise of a plane and a hero helping people was a new concept and people loved it, especially the kids.

Sky King can be credited with getting many young men and women interested in being a pilot. I know it did for me.

Watching Sky King helping people was so neat. That's all I could dream about. Sky King was one show that kids couldn't wait to see every Saturday.

Sky King's two planes used in the show were the Cessna T-50 twin engine "Bamboo Bomber" and the Songbird which is Cessna 310B. Both planes grew in popularity with the airing of Sky King.

Kirby Grant died in 1985 in an automobile crash on his way to Cape Canaveral . He was going to be honor by the shuttle astronauts for helping promote aviation and space flight.

Kirby will always be remembered as the guy who let a young kid learn the joys of flying.
