We have all been there, looking for
vintage 1960’s fashion that fits our figures and our budget. Well why
not make your own sixties clothes. I picked up the book “Fashion
Sewing by the Bishop Method”, published by J.B. Lippincott Company in
1962, at a local thrift shop.
This book offers it all, from detailed
instructions on the “newest” early sixties fashions for women, men and
children to tips on how to accessorize.
In fact the first chapter entitled “The well-dressed woman” is
stocked full of hints on how to choose the right hat, shoes, jewelry
and handbag to go with your ensemble along with “miscellaneous hints”
on everything from finishing touches to choice of color.
The second chapter entitled “The perfect dress, suit, or coat”
discusses the lines of your clothing, fabric choices and designs that
would best flatter your figure- 1960’s style.
The book goes on into twelve more chapters that give specific
instructions on how to sew the “latest” fashions for your family as
well as a few “classics”. The chapters include “Alterations of ready
to wear”, four chapters dedicated to women and girls, one to
“Children’s Dresses”, four chapters for men and boys, one for both
genders and ends with the aptly entitled “Trimming details for the
quality look”.
The “How-To” diagrams and pictures of this book include “Complete or
Back Drums in Skirts or Dresses”, the “Toppette”, “Pedal Pushers”,
“Bermuda Shorts” and many more classic designs that as of the current
time, had no name.
So, buy some retro fabric, tweeds and taffeta preferred, get out the
Singer and with the book “Fashion Sewing By The Bishop Method”, you
can be known as the Jacqueline of your neighborhood.
