It was just one of those weekends with nothing going on. The
five of us were sitting around in Larry’s basement reading old
Playboys and tossing ideas out, what we should do.
Denny had gone deer
hunting last season with his father and he was telling us about a
power line road they had taken that went up and over Snoqualmie Pass.
We came to the decision to load up my old beat up 48 Buick with
sleeping bags and canned food and see how far we could get on the
power line road.
About 30 miles East of Seattle, on I-90 we found the access
road to the power lines. At first the road was not bad, but as we
continued our climb upward the gaps got wider and the ruts larger.
There were times when everyone would get out and then I would make a
run across the gap. We were into the hills about 15 miles when we came
across some construction vehicles parked along side of the road.
There had been a big wash out and it looked as if they drove a
big D-8 Cat through the bank, adding the dirt and rock to the wash
out. After we got by the wash out, we continued our climb upward, into
the clouds and rain.
By the time we got out of clouds it was getting
dark, so we stopped and started a fire to cook our meal. We just got
done with our dinner when the rain hit once again; we ended up
sleeping in the car that night.
We got up at daybreak and the only thought we had was to get back down
to town for breakfast. By the time we got down to where the
construction vehicles were parked, it was around 9:30, and it looked
as if the workers were on a coffee break. When the construction
workers spotted us, they started yelling and running towards us waving
their arms.
I continued driving towards them, then all of sudden they turned and
started running away from us, when we got across the wash, they came
running up to my car. The man with the yellow hard hat told me to roll
down my window. “You kids, just drove over a 100 feet of dynamite
caps”
WOW thank god, we did not have the radio on.
