A Product Just for Kids

Looking over my shoulder for the hundredth time the line of kids was getting longer, it went down to the end of the block, continued around the corner.

Larry and I had been in line since 7am when we got to the candy counter in the drug store it was noon.

This was the first national "AD" campaign for a product just for kids.

The release date was the second week in June of 1950. I had an inside track on this product since my mother managed the drug store that would be selling the product.

The drugstore purchased three cases of the product and it was the general censuses amongst the kids at school that would not be enough.

I put my dollar on the counter, and the clerk counted out 100 pieces of "Bubble Gum" and Larry purchased 25 pieces. When we came out of the drug store we did not want to walk pass the line of kids so Larry and I "Jay walked", across the street.

We had agreed before hand not to chew any gum until we got to our secret place in the "Woods".

We were walking down the trail in the woods when all of a sudden two bigger boys jumped out from behind a tree and pushed Larry and I down to the ground and then grabbed our little bags of Bubble Gum and took off running down the trail laughing.

We were never to taste or blow a bubble on the first day.

After Fact......The drug store ran out of bubble gum before the day was over. A week later the drug store got another shipment in and at that time Larry and I purchased the same amount of gum but this time we put 2 pieces in our month before we left the drug store.
