The Courtship of Eddie’s Father

by Erika Cox

The Courtship of Eddie’s Father was one of my favorite shows as a kid. Although it was in reruns by the time I was old enough to watch it and understand what I was watching, I enjoyed watching the show. I think it was the music theme that got my attention and what I liked most about the show.

The television show aired in 1969 and was a remake or version of the movie of the same name that came out in 1963 starring Glenn Ford and his son, played by Ron Howard. The movie, which was a comedy, was about a son who wanted his widow father to get married again but constantly disapproved of his father’s choices.

The television show that aired in 1969 had pretty much the same theme but the son in the television showed less discontent for his father’s choices.

The show was based on a single father raising his son in California. The scene I remember the most is the one with the father and son walking on the beach hand and hand and the son persistently asking his father questions, like most children his age do. I remember the show’s theme song, “Best Friend” or the first line, “Let me tell you about my best friend”, being played.

This song is one of my favorite theme songs; I just love it. The scene and the song made the show very personable, enjoyable and pleasant. However, this show was not the first one to portray a widowed parent, in particularly, a father raising children alone.

There were a number of shows that depicted this including, The Andy Griffith Show and “My Three Sons.” All of which became a success.

The Courtship of Eddie’s Father’s cast included, Bill Bixby, who played the father, Tom Corbett. Tom was a successful businessman who was raising his son, Eddie, played by Brandon Cruz, alone. Eddie constantly tried to fix his father up with a number of women and was very involved in the selection process.

There was also Tom’s maid, played by Miyoshi Umeku, who helped run the household and also constantly give great advice to the father and son. Although, I don’t remember seeing any other people in the show, mainly because I was a child and it was a long time ago, the father’s co-workers also played a part in Tom’s life and raising his son. And the show had a slew of well-known actors making appearances on the show.

Bill Bixby directed many of the show’s episodes but his conflict with the producer about the show’s direction eventually led to its demise.

The show was cancelled in 1974, which is shortly before I started watching it. Not quite sure exactly because I don’t know when the reruns of the show began. What I liked most about this show is the theme song and the great relationship between the father and son. His son admired him and they had a great friendship and relationship. Tom never ignored his son and spent plenty of quality time with him to ensure a great loving relationship.

The Courtship of Eddie’s Father portrayed a loving father who was dedicated to raising his son, while at the same time running a successful business, and managed time to try and find a secure a relationship with a woman that would fit into his busy life and his son’s life.
